Bowenwork – Art of Healing
Bowenwork (also known as Bowtech – the Original Bowen Technique) evokes deep relaxation and renews the body’s capacity for self-healing. It is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. Sometimes called the homeopathy of bodywork, it utilizes subtle inputs to the body, stimulating the body to heal itself — often in profound ways.
A series of 3 to 5 sessions one week apart will allow the body to balance and reset patterns for optimal health. Many conditions may require additional sessions, and the goal is to move sessions further apart and give the body more time for integration. The effects hold well because this non-invasive modality allows the body to do the work itself.
Some conditions responding well to this technique are:
- Neurological or immune disorders
- Parkinson’s disease
- Lyme disease
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Stress and anxiety problems
- ADD/ ADHD
- Traumatic and overuse injuries
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Sprains and strains
- Neck, shoulder and back pain
- TMJ syndrome
- Gastrointestinal dysfunctions
- Orthopedic problems
- Podiatric problems
- Support sessions—pre-and post-surgery and during chemotherapy.
This very gentle work is appropriate for anyone, from newborns to the elderly or infirm. Though not intended to be ongoing therapy, it is helpful in cases of chronic or neurological conditions to continue session periodically.

“As a Registered Nurse I had very little understanding of the many holistic approaches to managing pain and chronic disease. Recently during a move, I injured my spine (L4 and L5) ruptured. I was prescribed pain meds and physical therapy, encouraged to have cortisone injections which I did not accept, and had some success but quickly slid back to the crippling shooting nerve pain with even the slightest overwork.
I have suffered with back pain since I was 19 and just learned to live with it, like the majority of people do, and over time the chronic pain has spread. It affects every part of your daily life! Lisa was in training at the time, and gently encouraged me to just try Bowenwork. I was so frustrated and desperate that I thought “what have I got to lose at this point?!” Lisa recommended her mentor, Ainslee Farrington, and I began sessions.
So not what I expected! Quiet, respectful, gentle pressure and patterning release with rest in between allowing the body/nervous system to process and correct. I honestly thought, “Well, that was relaxing…” but it felt like nothing and I doubted anything would come of it. I went to bed and when I woke up I was amazed…truly in disbelief that my pain – even the chronic neck and back pain I wake with every morning – it was gone!
Drinking lots of water, listening to my body and its subtle cues, and walking supported the Bowen techniques she used. A few weeks later we met again and she addressed other aches or concerns that arose during the week. She listened to everything I shared and then applied the techniques. Some of the moves were different, and sometimes the results vary, but it all was gently healing so much more than just my chronic pain.
All I can say is it worked for me in a profound way! Definitely worth trying and trusting the process….”-Susan Toole-Lennox
