Naomi Rather, Ph.D., LCHMC

Mental Health Counselor

It takes courage to confront issues that are painful, or to make significant changes in your life. It can feel daunting to begin couples therapy; patterns between adult children and their parents can be deeply entrenched. But if you’re willing to work hard, you can absolutely change the patterns that are causing you distress. Whether you’re looking to work individually, as a couple or a family, Naomi is honored to be a part of your healing journey. Her style is to be respectfully direct, in a warm and supportive way that helps you to become                                                                               the best version of yourself.

Naomi has expertise in the treatment of couples and family therapy, grief and loss, and trauma. She is committed to staying abreast of the latest treatment techniques and recently completed training in the use of psychedelic assisted therapy. She spent three years at the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver, and led bereavement groups as a Seacoast Hospice volunteer for many years.

Naomi is certified in EMDR, and has been using this effective technique since 1998 to treat trauma.  She is also a Certified Supervisor in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and provides supervision to therapists who are learning the model. Naomi co-hosts a podcast called That Relationship Show where experts join the hosts to talk about all things related to relationships. The podcast is available  on iTunes and Spotify.

She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and her Masters of Counseling from the University of Dayton. She completed her Ph.D. through Tilburg University, where she researched the topic of collaboration across disciplines with both the Family Practice and Integrative providers at Whole Life Health Care.

What to Expect from the First Appointment?

It can help to think of the first appointment as a way to know if we will be a good fit. I’ll take a history and then we’ll discuss what therapy could do for you. You will leave with a clear sense of how our work together would feel, and that will help guide you forward.
